## Fire Safety for Your BC Cabin
Fire safety is critical in BC's wildfire-prone landscape. Here's how to protect your cabin and family.
### Wildfire Risk in BC
**Understanding Risk Zones**:
- Interface areas (where development meets forest) are highest risk
- Most of BC's interior and much of Vancouver Island are significant risk
- Risk maps available from BC Wildfire Service
- Insurance rates reflect fire risk
**BC Wildfire Statistics**:
- Average 1,600 fires annually
- 2023 saw record-breaking season
- Climate change increasing risk
- Ember attack main ignition source
### FireSmart Principles
FireSmart Canada provides framework for wildfire-resilient properties:
**Priority Zone 1 (0-10m from structure)**:
- No combustible materials
- Non-flammable landscaping
- Clear all debris
- No firewood storage
- Remove dead vegetation
**Priority Zone 2 (10-30m)**:
- Reduce vegetation density
- Prune trees (2m clearance ground to branches)
- Space trees appropriately
- Remove ladder fuels
- Fire-resistant plants
**Priority Zone 3 (30-100m)**:
- Thin forest if possible
- Create fuel breaks
- Remove dead trees
- Maintain spacing between trees
### Fire-Resistant Construction Features
**Roofing** (Most Critical):
- Class A fire-rated roofing (metal, asphalt)
- All Avanta cabins use Class A materials
- Keep gutters clear of debris
- Screen vents with 3mm mesh
**Siding**:
- Fiber cement (excellent fire resistance)
- Metal siding
- Treated wood with fire retardant
- Our rainscreen gap reduces fire spread risk
**Windows**:
- Tempered or double-pane glass
- Smaller windows on fire-exposure sides
- Consider fire-rated shutters
**Decks**:
- Composite or fire-resistant decking
- Enclose undersides to prevent ember entry
- Non-combustible skirting options
**Foundation**:
- Non-combustible foundation preferred
- Screen any vents with fine mesh
- Clear vegetation from perimeter
### Interior Fire Safety
**Detection and Alarm**:
- Smoke detectors in every room (BC requirement)
- Carbon monoxide detector (required with combustion appliances)
- Interconnected alarms recommended
- Test monthly, replace batteries annually
- Replace detectors every 10 years
**Fire Suppression**:
- Fire extinguisher (minimum one per cabin)
- ABC-rated extinguisher recommended
- Mount in accessible location
- Know how to use before emergency
- Consider sprinkler system for larger cabins
**Escape Planning**:
- Two exits from every sleeping area
- Bedroom windows that open fully
- Clear path to exits
- Practice escape plan
- Meeting point outside
**Wood Stove Safety**:
- CSA-approved stove and chimney
- Proper clearances from combustibles
- Non-combustible hearth pad
- Annual chimney cleaning
- Proper ash disposal (metal container)
### Electrical Fire Prevention
**Installation Quality**:
- All Avanta cabins wired to code
- Arc-fault circuit interrupters in bedrooms
- GFCI protection in wet areas
- Properly sized circuits
**Usage Safety**:
- Don't overload outlets
- Use surge protectors appropriately
- Replace damaged cords immediately
- Space heater safety (tip-over, overheat protection)
- Unplug unused appliances
### Emergency Preparedness
**Emergency Kit**:
- N95 masks (for smoke)
- Flashlights and batteries
- First aid supplies
- Emergency contact list
- Important documents (copies)
- 72-hour supply of water and food
- Battery-powered radio
**Evacuation Preparation**:
- Know evacuation routes
- Monitor BC Wildfire Service alerts
- EmergencyInfoBC registration
- "Go bag" packed and ready
- Valuable documentation secured
**If Evacuation Ordered**:
- Leave immediately when ordered
- Follow designated routes
- Check in at emergency centers
- Don't return until all-clear given
### Insurance Considerations
**Wildfire Coverage**:
- Verify wildfire is covered in your policy
- Document cabin and contents (photos/video)
- Keep documentation off-property
- Consider replacement cost coverage
**FireSmart Discounts**:
- Some insurers offer reduced rates for FireSmart properties
- Document your FireSmart efforts
- Ask your insurer about available discounts
### Local Resources
