## Wood Stove Heating for BC Cabins
A wood stove provides reliable, atmospheric heating perfect for BC cabin living. Here's what you need to know.
### Why Choose Wood Heat?
**Advantages**:
- Independent of power grid
- Abundant fuel in BC
- Cozy cabin ambiance
- Lower operating costs (if wood available)
- Reliable backup heating
- Aesthetically appealing
**Considerations**:
- Physical labor (cutting, splitting, stacking)
- Storage space required
- Maintenance (chimney cleaning)
- Air quality regulations in some areas
- Not "set and forget" heating
### Choosing a Wood Stove
**Sizing Your Stove**:
- 200-400 sq ft: Small stove (40,000-60,000 BTU)
- 400-800 sq ft: Medium stove (60,000-80,000 BTU)
- 800-1,200 sq ft: Large stove (80,000-100,000 BTU)
Our cabins are well-insulated, so smaller stoves often suffice.
**EPA Certification**:
Required in BC. All new stoves must meet EPA emission standards:
- Step 1 (current): 2.5 grams/hour
- Step 2 (2020+): 2.0 grams/hour
**Stove Types**:
*Catalytic*:
- Catalytic combustor for cleaner burn
- Higher efficiency (longer burn times)
- Combustor replacement needed (every 3-6 years)
- Better for continuous heating
*Non-Catalytic*:
- Simpler operation
- Less maintenance
- Good for occasional use
- Slightly lower efficiency
**Recommended Brands**:
- Pacific Energy (Canadian made)
- Regency
- Osburn
- Drolet (Canadian made)
- Jotul
### Installation Requirements
**BC Building Code Requirements**:
*Clearances* (vary by stove/manufacturer):
- To combustible walls: 18-48" (or with wall shield)
- To combustible ceiling: 18" minimum
- To furniture: 48" recommended
*Hearth Pad*:
- Extends 18" in front of stove door
- Extends 8" beyond sides and back
- Non-combustible material (tile, stone, concrete)
- Minimum R-value specifications
*Chimney*:
- CSA/ULC certified chimney system
- 15-foot minimum height (draft requirements)
- 3-foot above roof penetration
- 2-foot clearance from any structure within 10 feet
- Single-wall or double-wall interior pipe to insulated chimney
**Installation Costs**:
- Stove: $1,500-$5,000
- Chimney system: $1,500-$4,000
- Hearth pad: $500-$2,000
- Labor: $500-$1,500
- Total: $4,000-$12,500
### Firewood in BC
**Best Species**:
- Douglas Fir: Excellent heat, readily available
- Maple: Very good heat, burns hot
- Birch: Good heat, attractive bark
- Alder: Moderate heat, easy to split
- Arbutus: Excellent heat, hard to find
**Firewood Math**:
- Cord = 128 cubic feet (4x4x8 feet)
- Well-insulated cabin needs: 2-4 cords/season
- Current prices: $300-$450/cord delivered
**Wood Preparation**:
- Split and stack immediately
- Season for 12+ months
- Keep covered on top, open sides
- Store away from cabin (fire risk, pests)
### Operation Best Practices
**Starting a Fire**:
1. Open damper fully
2. Use small kindling and newspaper
3. Build to larger pieces gradually
4. Let establish before loading
5. Adjust air after established
**Efficient Burning**:
- Burn hot (less creosote, more heat)
- Don't damper down too much
- Use seasoned wood only
- Maintain proper draft
- Clear ashes when deep
**Night and Extended Burns**:
- Load with larger pieces
- Reduce air slightly (not excessively)
- Use dense wood species
- Catalytic stoves excel at this
### Safety
**Fire Prevention**:
- Maintain proper clearances
- Keep flammables away
- Metal container for ashes
- Screen in front of open door
- Smoke/CO detectors essential
**Chimney Maintenance**:
- Professional inspection annually
- Clean when creosote reaches 1/4"
- Typically clean 1-2 times/season
- More frequent with green wood
**Carbon Monoxide**:
- CO detector required
- Ensure adequate ventilation
- Never close damper completely
- Regular maintenance critical
### Air Quality Regulations
**BC Air Quality**:
- Some areas have burning restrictions
- Wood stove exchange programs available
- EPA-certified stoves required
- Check local regulations
**Metro Vancouver**:
- Air Quality Management Bylaw
- Restrictions during poor air quality advisories
- Registration may be required
